When Mother Calls Us Home

There are no requirements that a birthday wish be realistic, so I tested the terms and conditions by asking for something I thought to cross the northern borders of absurdity into the land of impossibility. I wished that all suffering end. My wish floated away on the cigar smoke I blew towards the sky, aiming at no star in particular. My hopes that the Universe do me a solid by my next solar return lasted as long as the vapor, itself bound to the laws of reality. Perhaps another wasted opportunity.

I could’ve just asked for more money gained from…

How History Links Jefferson to Trump in the Black Lives Matter Era

In the west, capitalism and chattel slavery have been entangled since their respective beginnings, and the question of race and class has endured since those times. As far as those two institutions in the US, I figured we should explore the words of one of the leading philosophers of the 18th century.

“All men are created equal.”

These words, as written by Thomas Jefferson in the Declaration of Independence from The Crown, are usually seen as proof that the founders really were good men with an impeccable vision of future progress. They believed in the natural law that made Enlightenment…

Observations on the necessity of rebellions

The phrase Law and Order is manipulative. A device that commands our commitment for fear of social decay. We must challenge this concept of Law and Order to build a society that is both equitable and responsive. It is helpful for us to first have a broader view of power and how power uses Law to maintain Order.

Laws are the structure by which power is expressed and through which Order is enforced. The threat to that order does not simply occur when one breaks a law, but when power arbitrarily enforces the law. …

“Should I symbolically #RunWithMaud?”

I am glad today is not my first day. With a forecast of sure rain and surely a heavy heart, I didn’t know if I should continue or break my streak. As I laced my shoes, I contemplated the purpose and intent of my ensuing trot. Should I symbolically #RunWithMaud? Is it even my responsibility to do so?

My steps felt lighter today than yesterday, yesterday lighter than the day before, though my heart broke the scale with rage. What is 2.23 …

What is he running from?

It’s the Red Queen’s Race

At a faster pace.

Or is he running with Ahmaud

Are we all being chased?

Maybe he’s running in place.

Jerome is a Millennial. Like most Millennials, he left school with a lot of debt and few job prospects paying well enough for him to live well while paying off that debt.

Still, he hopped in the pool. Learning to swim, he practiced his form and gained the confidence that he would not, in fact, drown. Little did Jerome know, he was in the shallow end.

As his confidence grew, Jerome’s eyes wandered to the splashing on the far end. He aspired to those who raced from side to side in a winding, poetic rhythm. He admired those who exhibited…

How the humanity of Kobe Bryant inspired the hero in me

Photo by Ramiro Pianarosa on Unsplash

I could never pick up a ball and be Lebron James. I could never pick up a mic and be Jay Z. I had never even dreamed I’d run for office and become POTUS like Barack. These icons represent historical plateaus I could not fathom. Kobe Bryant was no less creative, accomplished, or genius, yet he represented something different. Something attainable. I could never Be Like Mike. Michael was god. Kobe was not. And that’s what made me love him.

Kobe Bean Bryant died at 41, achieving so much in his short life, yet having so much left to give…

You get to grieve: How I’ve dealt with loss this Holiday season.

By the way…

If I told you I would call you back or send you a message…

I lied…

Right now, I’ve got extreme social anxiety, and I have no interest in doing so.

It’s not you. It’s me.

No, I didn’t have a Merry Christmas. No Happy Holidays. My brother died a preventable death. If I don’t seem like myself…Guess what?!

I’m not…

I was ignorant to the “weight” of being strong.

So why would an otherwise private person share this much?

Because somebody else has experienced pain, hardship, and even loss of friends and loved ones, but never took…

An expression of rage.

I cannot burrow.

I cannot even ascend.

Damn your tentacles.

Thoughts on rain, drive, and focus

Today, it rained. Not in a hurricane type of way, but still very heavy rain. Enough rain to make you want to consider calling in and curling up. As a career entrepreneur, I’ve rarely had the opportunity to “take a personal day” and today was no different.

Truthfully, I hadn’t considered rescheduling, but a partner on our side of the table threw it out there. It was just rain. So, I threw back,

May need an umbrella.

I thought about what it would take to reschedule: ask my investors to block out time on their schedule, again; ask the partners…
